Our Story

C.A. “Buck” Knouse founded Greenwood Mulch in 1960. At that time, bark mulch was considered a by-product of sawmills. Buck found a way to make use of the waste from local sawmills by creating a bark mulch product and commercially marketing it. Buck was the original hardwood bark mulch producer. Through many years of experimentation, he was able to determine the best formula when it came to the decomposition process and moisture content. Others tried to copy Buck’s signature formula, but they were never able to match the quality of Greenwood Mulch’s original, all-bark mulch.

After 25 years of business, Buck was ready to retire and sold the business to his son Doug. Today Greenwood Mulch still uses the same all-bark formula from 1960. Over the years, we have produced the same great all-bark mulch in natural brown, dyed black, and dyed brown. We are proud to distribute our wholesale mulch products throughout Pennsylvania and beyond.
